Embedding media – not showing up

Hi!

I tried to embed an object today. Neither inserting just the code nor using the "Embed Media" function LJ recently added worked: It doesn't show up.
Here's the code:
< object width="450" height
="400">< param name="movie" value="http!
;://
goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=11503"></param>< embed src="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=11503" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" menu="false" width="450" height="400">
[I added some spaces, because I didn't know any other way to make the text viewable. Sorry.]
It's just some stupid little meme, but it made me wonder. There's just an empty space in my entry, in Opera as well as in IE.
The entry is here: http://vanita.livejournal.com/331081.html
I just made it public.

I looked around, but I couldn't find the answer, so I really hope you can help me.

That would be because of the exclamation mark and semi colon in the value attribute in param. Nothing to do with Flexible Squares :)

Thank you, but it doesn't show up without these, either.

It most definitely does:

Okay, now there's a problem, because I made it work on my own lj. *pokes* Let me investigate further.

I saw it work in another LJ as well, just not in mine.
Thank you for investigating. :)

Whoa! I tried the test myself to get some fresh code, make sure you hadn't made any errors in copying the code, and holy cow the errors! >.< Mine had some javascript mixed in there and was definitely wrong.

Okay, try this one:
<object width="450" height="400">
    <param name="movie" value="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=11503">
    </param>
    <embed src="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=11503" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" menu="false" width="450" height="400">
    </embed>
</object>
It works in my LJ.

Still nothing. LJ keeps counting up how many times I tried, though. "id=7" *lol*
It's weird.

Grrr. Okay, last one. If it doesn't work, I give up, and you'll want to contact Support and point them to this entry, too.
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=11503" width="450" height="400">
	<param name="movie" value="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=11503" />
</object>
This code is not working in my LJ, though. The flash movie's showing up, but it doesn't start playing.

For the support volunteers who'd view this thread, I got the code from a ALA article, and you can see it working perfectly on this website I coded.

It still doesn't show me anything. Weird.
Thanks a lot. I'll contact support now.

I had the same problem, but found it worked when I didn't add an extra code to my layer, to get the edit/mem links to appear on my main journal page.
When I added that code to my layer, it didn't work, when I removed it, it showed up again.

I don't know why though, so if anyone has got an idea?

I don't have these links on the main page. But I do have one to change the sign between the links.
Weird.

according to afuna this has the same cause as the voicepost problems. you probably saw it show up in the uncustomized entries because the tutorial you followed for adding links to the entries is outdated, using $e.text rather than $e->print_text().

here's the tutorial on getting rid of that problem, for both you and vanity:
